Unexpected

Pigs rush en masse down the steep bank. To their demise. Leaving one madman behind.

Now clothed. Calm. Coherent. And in his right mind.

The news spreads. People come from town and countryside to see for themselves. Hear eyewitness accounts.

But their response is unexpected.

They don’t want Jesus to stay. In fact, they can’t get Him out of there fast enough.

Clear the clutter

The realtors come to look at our house. Consider its selling features. Advise on what we must do as we get ready to place it on the market.

We know we need to clear the clutter. But their first comment? “You sure have a lot of books.”

A few books…

Why, yes. Yes we do.

Then comes the directive.

“Clear out this bookcase and that one and that one.  Go ahead and pack those books. Store them out of sight.”

Faithful witness

It’s a winter Sunday in Karachi. The late 1990’s. The worship service of the International Church of Karachi closes with the benediction.

Children run outside to play tag on the lawn in the sunshine. And adults filter slowly through the doors onto the patio.

Greeting one another. Stopping to chat and catch up. Pouring and sipping cups of tea in the shade of the carport.

Tea times after worship at the International Church.

Many linger for these fellowship times after the services. Sometimes for longer than the actual service itself.

Getting to know one another’s stories. Offering encouragement as we navigate the urban and cross-cultural challenges of living in the megacity. Karachi.
