Be holy

Holy. Holy. Holy. Echoing through the old covenant. And God is clear about the requirements. For coming into His Presence. Following His plan.

Numbers 16 details the consequences for some who try to do it their own way. After all, they’re entitled. It’s only fair.

But the unconsecrated
fall dead.
Careless in their coming.

Second-guessing God’s appointments.
Their selfish, personal promotion
on display.

Be holy (1 Peter 1:15-16).

Earthen vessels

Simple earthen vessels. There they are.

Wading through laws in Leviticus, I see them. In the details. Amid ritual regulations for priests, Levites, and the people of God.

In these particular earthen pots, they boil the sin offering. That only priests may eat.

Their use is short-lived in the days of the Old Covenant. Bronze bowls can be scrubbed clean. Earthenware can’t.

Living water

Our first home in Bandung, Indonesia, was on a street called Rancaherang. When I told people where we lived, they would nod knowingly and say, “Ah, mata air dari batu”—the source of water that comes from the rock.

It was a known source of pure water that came from somewhere deep within the earth.  Thirst-quenching, garden-drenching water. Always flowing, always abundant.

And there was no water shortage in that whole neighborhood. In fact, it started as a stream in our yard, flowed through a pond on the side of our house and into a stream that ran down to the next house. And on to the next house after that, and so on.

Each yard had a pond of fish and ever-flowing water.
