Christmas Devotional Memoir

Delay

Delay. Airport overflowing. Passengers waiting. Watching. Anxious. Resigned. Complaining. Shouting.

Weary mom holds one child and corrals the others. Trying to get home before snow.

Couple returning from vacation. Using up all that relaxation in one day of flight cancellations.

I sit beside a man from Newark. Started his day long before dawn. Now it’s late afternoon and his flight diverted from Pensacola to this small airport in Alabama.

He’s trying to find another way to reach his destination. But rental cars are long gone.

Lion in the thicket

Satan lurks. Like a lion in the thicket.

Waiting to seize a victim.

Cursing, deceit, and violence fill his mouth. From generation to generation. Oppression and terror? His language and modus operandi.

But into that thicket of devouring and death comes the Good Shepherd.

Seeking the lost.

Memoir

empty skies

Empty skies. In the days following 9/11/2001. The flight pattern over our home in Virginia—suddenly silent.

My husband was traveling in West Africa at the time. He called and I wept. We felt the distance in the midst of uncertainty.

Our world changed that day, but we drew near to the One who never changes. Held on to His Word. And Joshua 1:9 became our family verse during that season.

“Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
