Crossing Cultures Devotional Memoir

Night sky

Night sky. Stars lost in the city’s loud light.

Raised in a large urban center, I look back on my childhood. And remember something different.

Limited electricity. Unpredictable outages.

Frequent darkness in the evenings.

And stars.

Look up

Dawn. And I’m walking on a path interrupted by roots. Stumbling on acorns hidden beneath fallen leaves.

The way feels uneven.

Unpredictable.

I can’t look up. In the grey. Before full light reveals.

Devotional Making Disciples Memoir

Master artist

“Hmm,” my college art teacher says. Then again, “Hmmmm.”

She’s looking over my shoulder. At the simple drawing. Graphite lines. Bare bones to plan and guide the assigned painting.

“Bigger. Go big!” She says. With increasing volume. Her arms flying out for emphasis. “Stretch it out. Go biiiig.”

The startling command contrasts with my small, neat pencil sketch. So confined and contained.

That time I learned to “go big.” Art by me. 1978.
