Wordless

Wordless. I don’t know what to say. How to pray.

But longing stirs. Hunger to hear Your voice. See Your lamp shining in the dark.

I try to look ahead. Nearsighted vision blurs the future. Shapes without edges loom. Nothing is clear.

So I open the Scriptures. Hold Your Word close. And read in black and white, words on the page.

God speaks

We walk. Blue-skied afternoon. Fallen leaves swirling on the path. Picked up and scattered by the wind.

An after-Thanksgiving-dinner tradition, this walk takes us through shade and cold. To places in the sun. Beside the lake. Where water moves, reflecting rays.

The after-Thanksgiving-dinner walk through the neighborhood.

Conversations and laughter accompany this walk. As we breathe cool air in the shifting light.

The evidence of God’s creation and Presence is all around us on that restful stroll through the neighborhood. And I think about the ways God speaks. Breathes. And moves.

Words

Words. Wrestling through antiquated phrasing and sentence structure in classic devotional books engages my mind. Pushes me to discern.

New versions come out to simplify the flow for today’s reader.

But I’m drawn back to the original way it was written. How sentences were crafted in that era.

It makes me think about what I’m reading.
