Turn your eyes

“Turn your eyes upon Jesus.”

The simplest act. To move my gaze.

From the task. Pain. Problems. Ordinary ins and outs of every day.

It’s easy. No complicated checklist required.

And yet…

Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Turn your eyes upon Jesus.

Independence

There it is. The inner insistence of independence. The push to handle it on my own.

In the words made famous by toddlers everywhere, “I do it myself!”

And this pride fosters forgetfulness. Of His wisdom.

Shoves aside surrender. To His ways.

Even as I sing, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus.”

Making it harder

Funny how I fight it. In the little things. And the complex.

Wandering around in the peripherals or the past. Looking for personal resolve and strength. To accomplish this. Or that.

Other days, I slip into dwelling on my own inadequacy.

Marinating. In complicated issues and impossible situations.  Relying on opinion or quick fixes.

Only making it harder than it is.

By not seeking Him first.

How can it be?

“Turn your eyes upon Jesus.”

He sets me free to recalibrate my gaze. Away from self-made plans and accomplishments. Failures.

How can it be?

Because He first turned His eyes on me. On you.

Loving us with an everlasting love. Saving us from death when we repented and believed the truth of the gospel.

Choose

So today I choose the simplest act.

And turn my eyes upon Jesus.

“…let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,
fixing our eyes on Jesus,
the pioneer and perfecter of faith…”
Hebrews 12:1,2 NIV

What about you?

Do you need a reminder today in your everyday living? To turn your eyes upon Him?

What a paradox—looking for personal resolve and strength & dwelling on my own inadequacies—when I just need to turn my eyes upon Jesus! thank you for the reminder!

Listening to Newsboys song “Lord I don’t know” has also reminded me to look to HIM! Thanks!

I would love to hear from you!
