“Last word, His Word.” It was a game my college roommate and I played.
After lights were out, our conversation slowed. And one of us would say this phrase. When we remembered.
The other had to share a verse. From memory.
Simple practice
I was not prepared most of the time. “Jesus wept,” came out on occasion.
But this simple practice turned our focus from the ups and downs of the day. Settled our minds with His truth.
It was the last thing we talked about.
Who has the last word?
Now we walk daily in the complexity of 24-hour news cycles.
Social media on steroids. And millions of options on screens, right before our very eyes. Phones. Computers. Televisions.
What’s the last thing we talk about? Who has the final word before we go to sleep at night?
Who has the final word. Period. In everything.
His Word
“I will bless the Lord who counsels me—
even at night when my thoughts trouble me.
I always let the Lord guide me.
Because He is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.”
Psalm 16:7-8 CSB
Last word…
This one’s for you, Dale-o. Last word, His Word….
What about you?
How do you focus on the Lord at the end of the day? If you have a family, how do you help your children do this? Has the Lord settled your heart with His Word during the COVID-19 season? Please share in the comments below.

The Lord’s Prayer has been my comfort in recent days. It brings me back to His strength and my weakness and the current moment (not yesterday, not tomorrow.)
Yes, what a comfort! Thank you for sharing, sister.
Psalm 121:7-8 is a recurring reminder for me during these days…
The Lord will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.
Really enjoy your posts…thanks!
Such encouraging verses for such a time as this. Thank you!
Jesus to the bleeding woman- “your faith has made you well.” Susan thank you for pointing us to Him, always!!!
Thanks for sharing this “last word, His Word,” sister.
Word! Dale-o here on Monday morning…..
“I will take refuge in the shadow (shelter) of your wings until the disaster has passed.”
Ps. 57:1. Thankful for your encouragement and challenge to hide the Word in my heart. Those verses learned in college have remained a stronghold. A comfort. A shield. Protection. Love you Susan!
I was hoping you would see this today😍. Likewise, my friend, for your encouragement to me. Thanks for sharing this verse this morning.
Love this short but very good practice!!! Psalm 75:3– when the earth totters and all its inhabitants, it is I who keep steady its pillars! Selah— which reminds us to pause and ponder the previous verse. 😊
Yes! Let’s all pause and ponder that one!😊
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9.
I have clung to this passage more times than I can court. But it’s TRUTH, yesterday, today and tomorrow.
This is our family verse! Thank you for sharing, sister.
Phil. 4:6-7 is a comfort always. But have been thinking over the loaves and two fishes miracle for some reason. It keeps going over in my mind–maybe God reminding me that He can do much with little. I feel like I’m doing so little right now.
Such a good reminder for all of us during these days to give this “so little” to Him. Thank you for sharing!
