Mystery

Mystery. Mysterion.

One summer night I stand on the porch.
Watching a mystery.

Heat lightning.
Light pulsating in silent, brilliant rhythm.
Illuminating massive white clouds in night sky.
I can’t tear my eyes away.

Darkness can’t conceal His light
as it ripples through fields of cumulus.
The mystery.
The glory.
Soundless, yet it speaks.

Through the years,
I’m drawn to
the mystery of God’s Word.

Revealing. Piercing. Brilliant.
Captivating my heart and mind
with the rhythm of His Truth.
Light pulsing through the dark.

He illuminates the deep night of the soul
with the wonder of the holy.
The message of unfailing love.

Jesus Christ crucified.
Bearing the penalty for our sin.
Buried in a tomb.
Resurrected in victory over sin and death.

Mysterious. Stunning. Gloriously true.

I stand on the porch watching heat lightning
and remembering His Word.
Worshiping the Maker of the universe.
Praising the Word who became flesh
and dwelt among us.
Revealing the only way to the Father.

Mysterion. Mystery.
Mystery revealed.

Alleluia.

“Now to Him who is able to strengthen you
according to my gospel and the proclamation
about Jesus Christ, according to
the revelation of
the mystery
kept silent for long ages but now revealed
and made known through the prophetic Scriptures, according to the command of the eternal God to advance the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles—
to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ
—to Him be the glory forever! Amen.”
Romans 16:25-27

Note: The Greek word mysterion, translated mystery or secret, is not unknowable. It is something He reveals to us.
