Crossing Cultures Memoir

New patterns

During our second month in Pakistan, our family of three traveled north to Murree. For a month of intensive language learning and cross-cultural adjustment.

We stayed in one of several flats (apartments) that made up an old house on the side of the mountain.

And began learning new patterns for living.

Language study. Shopping for groceries. Cooking with new ingredients. Boiling our drinking water. Washing clothes and hanging them on the line.

Breathing fresh mountain air eased the adjustments. New friends helped us find our way.

Murree. 1992.

Cup of water

A cup of water. In debilitating heat, it can mean survival.

A large clay pot sat beside our gate. Full of water. With cup attached. Ready to meet the need of any passerby.

Unrelenting sun and desert wind meant dehydration was never far away.

The clay kept the water cool. Even on hot days.

Forgiven

Forgiven little? Loving little.

Simon invites Jesus to a meal in his home. Holding Him at arm’s length. Studying the Master.

And in the midst of critical scrutiny, he foregoes the most basic act of hospitality.

Washing the feet of his guest.

Forgiven much. Loving much. Image by William Priess on Unsplash.
