Aunt Wilma

First grade.

Walking out the side gate of our backyard in Surabaya, I turned right, and headed down the driveway to Aunt Wilma’s house. My Dick and Jane book clutched to my chest.

After climbing her front steps, I knocked on the screen door. I could hear the ceiling fan turning. Her dog, Si Nakal, gave a soft bark.

Aunt Wilma opened the door and welcomed me in with a smile.

I eagerly showed her my book. Then we sat on the couch and I read it aloud.

Aunt Wilma with me and my little sister, Ann.

Desert city

Desert city sojourn.

And I wade in the book of Isaiah. Meditating on the prophet’s words. For months.

Soaking in these passages that sound familiar. Close to home.

Scripture speaks true. Pointing out rebellion.

And revealing His compassion.

It is written

“It is written.”

Word of God speaking words of God. Teaching us the way.

After 40 days and nights of fasting in the wilderness, He’s hungry. Son of God. Son of Man. Hungry.

And the devil strikes first where He’s feeling immediate need.

Food.

“If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread” (Matthew 4:3).

In other words: Prove it, Jesus.
