Cup of water

A cup of water. In debilitating heat, it can mean survival.

A large clay pot sat beside our gate. Full of water. With cup attached. Ready to meet the need of any passerby.

Unrelenting sun and desert wind meant dehydration was never far away.

The clay kept the water cool. Even on hot days.

This is why

“I think this is why I’m here.”

We heard it more than once in Karachi. From expatriates on short assignments. With various companies. Consulates. Schools.

They heard about the international church meeting in our house. And came on Fridays for worship. Cross-cultural living in this “hardship assignment” made them stop and consider what’s crucial. In light of eternity.

Myrna* was one of those. The religious environment in Pakistan made her more aware of spiritual things.

When asked about her faith, Myrna replied, “I’ve always been a Christian.”

Why follow Jesus?

Why would someone risk their life to follow Jesus? Why give up all for Christ?

Eternal life with Him. Of course.

But so much more.

Across the years, we move. Entering new places. Living and learning in various cultures where following Jesus may cost everything.

And I consider a few of the many reasons for choosing Him. Why I can’t imagine life without my Lord.

Now and forever.
