Making Disciples

In the details

God’s Word resounds with Who He is. In the details.

Rich and true. With bits and pieces interwoven. Connecting in surprising ways.

And along the path as we walk with Him, He faithfully teaches. Reveals. Counsels His children by the Holy Spirit.

So one day, I’m in the book of Zechariah. Noticing 30 pieces of silver.

30 pieces

Zechariah, Old Testament prophet.  Connecting the worth of a shepherd. With 30 pieces of silver.

And those 30 pieces are thrown down.

In the house of the Lord.

To the potter. (Zechariah 11:13)

The words of the prophet must echo in the ears of the disciples as they reflect on their Shepherd.

Blood money

They witness His betrayal by one of His own disciples and discover it was in exchange for money. 30 pieces of silver.

Then, they learn Judas threw the silver into the temple after the deed.

And, because it was “blood money,” the priests couldn’t put it in the temple treasury.

So, it was used another way. To buy the potter’s field.

In the details

Pray for wisdom when reading His Word.

Don’t make assumptions. But take notice. And watch when intricate details come to light. Intertwining stories. From beginning to end.

We never stop learning. Because there is always more to know about our God. Who He is and what He does.

So listen, read, study, meditate on, and memorize Scripture.

May His Word richly dwell in us. As we abide in Christ.

What about you?

Have you noticed the threads interwoven throughout Scripture that help us see? What is an Old Testament reference that reminded you of the New?

Recently it occurred to me that God’s covenant with Abraham recounted in Gen 15 is in some measure a ‘picture’ of Gethsemane. A deep sleep overcame Abraham, and God alone walked through the sacrificial pieces…the promises were not impacted by anything Abraham did as he did not walk between the sacrificial pieces. God alone would bring about the promises.

Likewise, in Gethsemane, sleep overcame the disciples while the Lamb of God was overcome with sorrow unto death prior to the Cross. The New Covenant in His blood was not dependent on anything the disciples did, but their lives, and the lives of generations throughout the uttermost parts of the earth, would be transformed as a result. God alone accomplished it and continues to fulfill the promise.

For a few years now I have been reading through the Bible – usually in a chronological order. I wasn’t surprised the first or second time that I saw something that I had missed before or that connected in a way that I didn’t know. Now I read with expectation to see something in a fresh way.

Thanks for reading. I'd love to hear from you!
