Light. I don’t truly consider its absence. Until one memorable experience. During middle school.
Our family is in America on stateside assignment at the time. And touring historic sites or natural wonders across several states.
Then, one day, we’re standing in a large cave.
Lights all around.
Until someone turns them off.
Darkness
In an instant, we’re enveloped in darkness.
Deep. Disorienting.
Pitch black.
Unable to see my hand in front of my face. Literally.
We stand still.
Quiet. Except for a few gasps among the group.
Full light
Then, the smallest sliver of light.
Even there, in cavernous dark, the tiny glow cannot be conquered.
Even in our limited vision, this feels like hope.
And one by one, lamps come on.
Showing us the way.
Next steps.
Till we’re out of the darkness, walking in the full light of day.
God is light
At times the world’s dark disorients. Dismays. Disturbs.
But even the tiniest spark of the gospel illuminates. Overcoming fear and blindness.
His radiance sings hope and peace. Eternal security.
In Him, eyes open. To truly see.
“God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5).
What about you?
Do you remember what it was like to be in deep darkness? How did the Lord reveal His light to you?

Cancer treatments years ago were the darkness. The “light” shining was:
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.” Isa 43:2
I never sustained radiation burns from radiation treatments.
Thank you for sharing how He worked in that time of darkness. Thankful for His sustaining Word and faithfulness.
My college roommate had come from a non-Christian background and she tried to describe to me the depth of darkness surrounding those who don’t know Jesus. She said she wouldn’t wish it on an enemy but that she prayed for me that God would allow me a glimpse so I could walk alongside the ones in darkness and share light. I think God has answered her prayer many times over.
Wow. To try and describe that. Thanks for sharing this story. And thank you for sharing the Light.
If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light about me be night,”
even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is bright as the day,
for darkness is as light with you. Psalm 139:11-12
This passage comes to mind as I think about light and dark. Ever since I did a deep study of Genesis a few years ago, I’ve been focused on light in the Word. What a blessing to have had a mother who walked in the light and spoke of the light. Know you continue to carry on all that you learned and were taught by her. Love to imagine how our mothers are now standing in the light of Christ! No more darkness there.
Thank you for sharing these verses. Some of her favorites. And wonderful to imagine that. Beautiful.
Makes me think of Mom and all her “light” verses.
Yes. When I realized what was already scheduled to post Sunday night, I knew it was His timing…♥️
Reminds me of Mom and all her “light” verses. 🙂
