Devotional Making Disciples

What are you looking for?

“What are you looking for?”

The question. Directed to two disciples of John. Earlier, they hear their teacher say, “Look, the Lamb of God!” as Jesus walks by. And they take off after Him.

Now they’re trailing behind on the path.

Jesus turns. And asks.

Come and see

“What are you looking for?”

The question is deeper than they’re ready to say. And they answer with their own query.

“Rabbi, where are you staying?”

Safe ground. Concrete location. Deflecting decision.

And Jesus says, “Come and see.”

Messiah

These two disciples of John go and see. It doesn’t take long for one of them, Andrew, to know. This is who he’s looking for.

He goes and tells Simon, his brother, ‘We have found the Messiah” (John 1:41).

And brings Simon to Jesus.

Their lives will never be the same.

What are you looking for?

Jesus asks the curious, the seeker, the interested.

“What are you looking for?”

We need the question. For clarity in our own minds.

Is it just educational interest in a historical figure? Hope for political change? Curiosity about what’s in it for us?

Or do we want to walk with Him? Stay with Him? Truly follow the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world? (John 1:29)

Watch and listen

See who Jesus is. Read the Gospel accounts of His life on earth. Watch as prophecies spoken ages before are fulfilled in this One called the Son of God.

Consider how His death, burial, and resurrection turn ordinary, unlearned people into bold witnesses, telling others.

Read how they proclaim salvation through Jesus Christ from Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, to the ends of the earth. Listen as His followers continue sharing this Good News today.

“If anyone wants to follow after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23).

What are you looking for?

What about you?

How did you first become interested in who Jesus is? What were you looking for?

One reply on “What are you looking for?”

As I grew up in church in an era when ‘good people went to church’, I attended Sunday school from an early age and Jesus was always a ‘known’ entity to me. Daily living was rather void of God’s involvement apart from perfunctory grace at meals and bedtime prayers. There was never the idea of walking with God as much as performance in obeying the rules. The Holy Spirit was not talked about, even in church. It was some years before relationship entered the equation for me. The question of what I looked for changed along the way in learning to walk with God. I’m still learning at 75 yrs.

In a current study of Acts, boldness in declaring Christ is a recurring emphasis…truly needed in our time as expressions of resistance to the gospel remain the same in our day. Gentleness, winsomeness and boldness seem a challenging set of traits in the natural. 🙂

I would love to hear from you!
