Now I belong

“Now I belong to Jesus…”

As a child, learning to the play the piano, I’m drawn to the song’s chords and movement.

Crescendos and decrescendos communicate the message musically.

But lyrics repeated, settle in my heart. Comforting me with truth.

“Now I belong to Jesus.” And even at that young age I believe. There is security and safety in the arms of my Savior.

Put to death

Recently, I’m reminded of this hymn, while reading Romans 7.

“You belong to Him who was raised from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God” (Romans 7:4).

Belonging to Jesus involves the cross. And resurrection.

We are “put to death” in relation to the law. Through the body of Christ. (Romans 7:4)

Why? That we may belong to another.  Our risen Lord.

Fruitfulness

In Christ, we are no longer possessed by law. Or enslaved to sin. (Galatians 4:7)

Instead, we live in a new identity: His treasured possession. And we belong to Jesus for a beautiful purpose: fruitfulness.

No longer bearing fruit of sin and death.

But fruit of life and obedience.

Now I belong

Fruit-bearing comes through our attachment to the Vine. As believers, we abide in Christ. And His Spirit dwells in us.

Our hearts are transformed to walk the extraordinary way of life and truth, as we remain in the One who is holy and just and good. The fruit we bear is His. Because without Him, we can do nothing.

We resist the father of lies. Not dwelling in ways of deceit or darkness that destroy.

No, in Christ we cry out with a crescendo of confidence, “Abba, Father!” (Galatians 4:6).

“Now I belong to Jesus.” Amen.

“No longer bearing fruit of sin and darkness” reminds me of the song “No Longer Slaves” declaring “I am a child of God”
