Crossing Cultures Making Disciples Memoir

Deny yourself

Early in my adolescent years, Mom remarked, “If Dad said the sky was blue, you would say it’s green.”  Her words stand out in my mind.

Although I most likely protested (duh), inside I knew she was right. As I grew, maturity glossed over that stubbornness.

But pride still hovered close to the surface.

I was 29 when I married Todd and 33 when our first child was born.  Suddenly a lot of “set in my ways” was unset and upset.

Then we arrived in Pakistan in 1992.

Preconceived

Preconceived outcome
looms.
Hinders.
Weakens the witness.
“Do you believe this is true?”
A simple question.
One I can ask
after
sharing the gospel.
But everything in my mind
braces for resistance,
remembering
frequent rejections.
Anxious thoughts pile up.
Expecting the “no.”

Skipping Truth

“I didn’t think God should say that.” I remember the look on her face. The raw honesty of her words. Skipping truth because it entered a place of brokenness in her life.

The memory floods in as I ponder the importance of handling the Word of God rightly. With integrity. In study and proclamation.

Studying passages in context. In the whole counsel of Scripture. And together with other believers.
