“Blessed is the man….” Our class repeats Psalm 1. Rhythmically. As directed by the professor.
And years later the words return to my mind. With a beat.
His Word.
Faithful and true.

Don’t
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,…”
No steps taken following the deceiver’s directions. Don’t even go there.
“…nor stands in the way of sinners,…”
Walk on by. Don’t give sin a chance to influence and pull you in.
“…nor sits in the seat of scoffers;…”
If I’m not supposed to walk that way, or slow down to a standstill, I certainly shouldn’t sit there and stay a while.
This only leads to contempt. Mocking the true.
Delight
“…but his delight is in the law of the Lord,…”
Delight? I remember wondering at this. The psalmist’s delight in the law and statutes and precepts.
But laws make up much of God’s Word in his day. And every word from the mouth of God is treasured. More than gold or silver. Sweet to his taste, like honey from the honeycomb.
His hunger and thirst for it makes me pay attention to all of Scripture. Instead of only dwelling in the New Testament.
His Word
“…and on His law he meditates day and night.”
I see it. This delight in His Word begins as I submit in His presence and spend time in prayer. Taking time to sit and dwell in the Scriptures.
Then I’m able to stand firm in His truth. And walk by faith the path He has designed. Reversing the sometimes subtle, slow slide toward sin.
Sit, stand, walk.
Bearing fruit
“He is like a tree planted by streams of water, that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither…. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away….”
Stability and fruitfulness? Or empty, weightless chaff, scattered and purposeless.
I want to be like that tree.
Firmly rooted.
What about you?
Is there a verse or passage about God’s Word that has impacted you? What are some ways you meditate on His Word day and night?

Just yesterday, Proverbs 8…Wisdom speaking to mankind…vs 34-36 “watching daily at my doors” caught my attention:
“Blessed are those who listen to me,
watching daily at my doors,
waiting at my doorway.
For those who find me find life
and receive favor from the Lord.
But those who fail to find me harm themselves;
all who hate me love death.”
DAILY has been a life-long work in progress…better at it in my retirement years.
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing. I agree, a life-long learning and retirement lends itself to more extended time in His Word…a blessing.
Proverbs 3 has been on repeat in my heart for a few years – and this year (2025) I have been asking God for wisdom – Looking back over these months, He knew what I would need and has provided it!
Do not be wise in your own eyes: fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.” Proverbs 3:7-8
Amen. Thank you for sharing this!
