Resurrected

Resurrected. Standing in their midst. 

Jesus, the crucified. 

Still bearing marks of nails in his hands and feet, the cut of a spear’s entry in his side.

Jesus, who died on the cross. Was buried in a tomb. Now risen. And right before their eyes.

The disciples see. And believe.

Thomas

Standing in their midst. 

Jesus makes a second appearance. This time, Thomas is in the room. 

Earlier in His time on earth, the disciples try to persuade Jesus not to return to Judea. “Rabbi, just now the Jews tried to stone you and you’re going there again?” (John 11:8)

And at that time Thomas steps up. He’s the one who says, “Let’s go too so that we may die with him” (John 11:16). 

Brave. Devoted. Thomas.

Resurrected Christ

But when he misses Jesus’ appearance on Resurrection Day? Thomas doubts.

“If I don’t see the mark of the nails in His hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe” (John 20:25).

So, instead of courageous, his name bears a connotation of doubt and disbelief. 

To this day.

Yet, in the presence of the resurrected Christ—Jesus, who invites him to touch, see, and believe—Thomas declares, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28).

By faith

Jesus speaks to us who need definitive proof. Hands-on evidence. “Because you have seen Me, have you now believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed” (John 20:29). 

No matter how much you can see or touch, in the end it is by faith. We repent, believe, and are saved. 

Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. And “by believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:31).

Rejoice! We serve a resurrected Savior.
