“There’s a song in the air. There’s a star in the sky.”
It was always my favorite carol as a kid. At Christmas.
Years later. In a country with only a small percentage of believers. I was walking through a department store one day and suddenly stopped. Listened.
Christmas music was in the air. Playing over the sound system. Lyrics and all.
“…O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!”
On a mission
In the first place we lived overseas, a young woman told me her story. How she’d rebuked her older sister. For listening to the lies of Christians.
“I was so angry. I told Zara* she had betrayed our family. By turning away from our religion.”
Sana* eventually moved to the big city to live with her sister and brother-in-law.
Focused. Intentional. On a mission to convince Zara of her foolishness. And win her back.
But one day she heard the music.
Unexpected
Sana was out walking on her sister’s campus one morning. Voices rang out from a chapel. People were singing.
She stopped.
Listened.
And the fear, the anger swarming inside subsided. She felt peace.
It was curious. Unexpected.
Lifting the veil
Another time, she slipped into the chapel. Sat in the back. As they sang and sang.
Music. Softening her heart.
Working past the barriers. Lifting the veil so firmly attached.
And one day, Sana turned and followed the Jesus they sang about.
He changed everything. And gave her a heart to reach others with the gospel.
Song in the air
There’s a song in the air at Christmas. Even in places where Christians are not.
Music moves past walls and defenses. Awakening hearts.
So, I pray.
Lord, open their ears to hear and their eyes to see. May lyrics of Your Truth pierce the darkness.
Drawing them to the One and Only.
What about you?
Have you seen music draw people to the gospel? How are you praying for nonbelievers this Christmas?

I’m singing “Let There Be Peace on Earth” as I walk through my neighbourhood. Music is such a powerful reminder and an instrument of peace!
Amen, sister.

Beautiful. Thanks for sharing this. I’ve never heard this version!
Years ago, Dr WA Criswell would tell us to be glad for the carols. It is the only time of the year when the heathen can hear the gospel whether they want it or not and maybe someone will answer His call.
