Treasure. In my childhood, any mention of it fascinated me. Inspired imagination.
Treasure buried. Hidden. The historical findings of archaeological digs revealed in layer after layer.
The mystery, captivating. How various clues led to discovery. Of riches. And ancient civilizations.
In those days, I dreamed of becoming an archaeologist. But meanwhile, I was on the lookout. Tracing evidence that might lead to a prize.
Mystery
My archaeological dig in our back yard didn’t get very far. Mainly turning up earthworms in the rich volcanic soil of Surabaya. But occasionally a coin appeared. A nail. An old key. And I deposited these in my small box of treasures.
Best friend Lisa and I pretended we were detectives. Nancy Drew and her sidekick Nan. We discovered some old broken pieces of porcelain on the roadside. While walking back and forth between our houses.
Treasures. What was their story? How did they land at that particular place? Who lived there long ago?
Mystery.
Revealed
There’s something satisfying in the search. But mystery revealed has its own particular joy.
The Father knows we’re made for it.
Curious about what’s hidden. Bent on seeking to find. And celebrating the unexpected, surprising reveal of true riches.
Glorious.
No ordinary treasure
Jesus recounts stories of such treasure. Uncovered. Found. Dug out of the ground.
And we learn this is no ordinary treasure. It is a Kingdom. With a King worth all that we have, all that we are.
Not treasure we hold in our hands.
But Treasure that holds us. Completely. For always.
Go and tell
So, we seek the true Treasure. Daily abide in Him. Then go and tell others about this mystery revealed.
Glorious!
20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Ephesians 3:20-21 ESV
What about you?
Have you ever searched for treasure? When was the mystery of the gospel revealed to you?

Dear Susan,
Some of your childhood was like mine [although I live in the frozen north, north of Montana, not in the tropics] – the fun of finding bits of broken Chinaware with dainty designs as I walked along the back alley from my backyard to a friend’s backyard; & the only career that interested me, beside being a wife & mother, was a fleeting youthful interest in archeology. Thanks for the memories. However, I especially love the way you write, with succinct phrases which make ideas from God’s word come alive. I keep a little archive of what I call your prose-poetry which blesses me.

Thank you, Myrna, for sharing your story from the “frozen north.” 🙂 And I’m grateful He’s used these posts to encourage you. His Word truly is a never-ending treasure, isn’t it? And He is faithful to teach us His truth.
Grace and peace to you.
My family has a long-standing joke about giving me boxes – one year at Christmas I admired the box that my present was in (a waxed cardboard with a lid) and they laughed! Moving internationally kept me from storing too many things but everything I have now has a story with it. Treasures include memories!
Yes, the stories those treasures tell! Thanks for sharing, friend.
When I hear “treasure,” I always think of Matt. 6:21, “For where you treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
I also think of pirates and map to treasures that we read about as kids.
But you know me, I love a good mystery and figuring out the clues and finding the solution. (which is treasure in its own sense).
Yes! I almost included Matthew 6:21…it’s been one of those reminders to me through the years when I pray, “give me an undivided heart.” Thanks for sharing 🙂
