Devotional Making Disciples

Psalms

Benedict of Nursia (480-547) first formed his Rule for the abbey he served in Monte Cassino, Italy.

Last year I grew curious about what this guide contained. And one particular practice caught my attention. It meant the monks of his monasteries lived on a steady diet of Psalms.

They repeated the entire book each week.

Psalm 57

Psalm 57. Giving words when there are no words.

Soaring through the twists and turns of our sojourn.

Speaking true my fears and frustrations.

Then bringing me back to praise and vision. Recounting the faithfulness of the Most High God and declaring Him to the nations.

Crossing Cultures Devotional Memoir

Sing to Me

“Just sing to Me.”

Memory rises up. From twenty years ago.

I’m traveling in the river of motorcycles and public transport vehicles. Cars and buses. All pressed together in the rush of a mountain city’s traffic.

Navigating the ebb and flow as I drive. Mentally engaged. But not.

Thoughts drift far away. Heart sits heavy.

All around me, the hum and blare of engines revving, horns blowing, peddlers calling.
