Shepherd feet make paths. Up hills and through fields. As shepherds do what shepherds do.
Tending flocks. And keeping watch. Under sun and stars and moon. Alert for thieves and predators. Protecting the sheep.
And little do they know. Their ordinary feet are about to change. Into the extraordinary.
Beautiful feet.
Good news
Brilliance overtakes the dark one night. Radiance unmatched. For the glory of the Lord shines all around as an angel of the Lord appears before the shepherds.
And they are terrified.
The angel says what angels say. “Fear not….”
And proceeds to announce good news of great joy. For all people.
“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:11-12 ESV).
Shepherd feet
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased!” (Luke 2:14).
In the aftermath of a thunderous chorus by angelic multitudes, these shepherds respond with stunning clarity.
They don’t question the revelation.
No, they take action. Right away. Shepherd feet hurrying to town.
“Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us” (Luke 2:15).
And sure enough, they find Mary and Joseph. And see the baby lying in a manger (Luke 2:16).
Beautiful feet
Almost immediately, those shepherd feet become beautiful feet. Perhaps the first people ever to give witness.
“They reported the message they were told about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them” (Luke 2:17-18).
The message? This baby is the Savior, Christ the Lord!
Good news of great joy, indeed.
And they return to their fields. Still glorifying and praising God for “all the things they had seen and heard, which were just as they had been told” (Luke 2:20).
Go and tell
This Christmas, be watchful in your fields. Listening and attentive to God’s Word.
Then, don’t hesitate. Go! And tell the Good News of great joy.
Our Savior, Christ the Lord, has come.
For all the world.
“As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news” (Romans 10:15).
What about you?
What do you learn from the shepherds in Luke 2? Are you watching for opportunities to share the Good News of great joy?

This past week the Lord gave me those verses from Romans three times. I keep asking where and to whom do I go? Is there someone specific or a tribe?
I had the unexpected opportunity to invite someone to our Christmas Eve service. It had come up naturally and the invitation was well received. Now I pray for God’s work to draw her to Himself in whatever place she is.
