“The way of the cross leads home….”
In worship settings of my childhood, the hymn marched. Triumphant. Its lyrics sung with gusto.
In later years, the words hit differently. Move me into quiet consideration. Thoughtful meditation.
On how this is lived out. Day by day.
Counting the cost
Walking paths in other parts of the world this past year, we hear stories. About people counting the cost. Then taking up their cross to follow Him.
Sobering reality, the weight of obedience in their context.
Turning from their family’s religion and choosing Jesus often leads to fierce rejection. And loss of home, work, family, community.
Even death.
Die to fears
And sent-ones who share the gospel confess they must die to their own fears.
Fears of the fallout for these new believers as they tell others about their newfound hope.
But in the end? They know.
No amount of suffering can even begin to compare with the hopeless alternative: spending eternity separated from God.
The way of the cross
“The way of the cross leads home….” Its melody whispers through my mind. In minor key.
Remembering Good Friday and the crucifixion.
Remembering those who’ve given their lives for the sake of the gospel. Witnesses. Martyrs.
Remembering each one of us is called to live in sacrificial obedience. Dying to self. With songs of surrender ever on our lips.
No matter the cost.
Leads Home
But, wait. Listen! The tune turns triumphant as we walk this hard and glorious path.
Hearts rejoicing. Voices celebrating Resurrection. Singing loud Christ’s victory over sin and death.
The way of the cross leads Home.
Glory to God in the highest!
Run with endurance
“Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance
the race that lies before us,
keeping our eyes on Jesus,
the source and perfecter of our faith.
For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of God.”
